2011 Summer Internship Program - Meet the Interns!

Casey Grambo is the Assistant Stage Management Intern at Playhouse on Park this summer where she dabbles not only in stage management but also in props and run crew. She is a rising senior at Fairfield University, majoring in Theatre and minoring in Educational Studies and Music. Casey is the Publicity and Marketing Intern for Theatre Fairfield and a co-president of the improv club on campus, Your Mom Does Improv. She is thrilled to be working with passionate theatre makers and would like to thank Dawn, Darlene, Tracy, and Sean for giving her this opportunity to further her theatre experience and education. Donnie Collins is a literary and general intern at the Playhouse. He spends most of his time reading through new work submissions and writing script analyses. Donnie also ran sound for the the summer production of YOU'RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN. He gained most of his previous theatre experience at the Loomis Chaffee School's NEO theatre, where his credits include stagemanaging THE TEMPEST, and assistant stagemanaging ANYTHING GOES. This upcoming fall he'll be entering the Writing for Film and Television program at Emerson College.
Helena Morris is a rising senior at St. Olaf College, where she is pursuing a Theatre and an English major, acts in various theatre productions throughout the year, and works in the scene shop. After college, Helena plans to attend graduate school for Theatre. Her interest in the production side of theatre has led her to the position of General/Literary Intern here at Playhouse on Park. She spends the day reading and evaluating scripts, painting sets, and, doing errands for the Playhouse. She is also the sound board operator for the July production of CHICAGO. Helena's experience has been invaluable to her because she has been able to work with essentially every aspect of running a theatre, from selling tickets, and making spreadsheets, to running a soundboard and building a set. Helena is pursuing an acting career, and while she is specifically interested in musical improv, she is exhilarated by participating in all types of performance.
Maha Kemal is the Business Office Intern at the Playhouse on Park. In the fall, she will be a junior at Central Connecticut State University. She is currently majoring in Finance and has a minor in Environmental Science. After graduating, she plans to go to business school and hopes to receive an MBA. At the Playhouse she works on various budget, payroll, box office and other administrative tasks. Her previous day jobs include working as a file clerk and after school supervisor. When she's not at the Playhouse Maha works as a Pharmacy Technician at CVS Pharmacy and spends time with her family and friends. Maha thanks everyone at Playhouse for this wonderful opportunity and hopes to return soon.

The Playhouse Theatre Group, Inc. Internship Program is a great way for young theatre professionals to learn and grow both professionally and personally. The Program allows students, graduates, and others to have a hands-on experience. Participants work in administrative or production departments while Playhouse Theatre Group staff and artists function as mentors, guiding and instructing interns as they make the transition from student to professional. Through daily assignments and duties with a given department, professional development, volunteer opportunities, and free tickets to productions, participants are offered the chance to experience the inner workings of a professional theatre. This year, the following interns will be hired: 1 Stage Management intern, 1 Costume intern, 2 Production interns, 1 Business Office intern, 1 Marketing intern, 1 Development intern, 1 Literary intern, and 1 Education intern.  Over the course of their 10 week internship, the interns will be exposed to at least 2 professional productions and planning for the 2011-2012 season.

ADMINISTRATIVE INTERNSHIPS


Business Office Internship
The Business Office Intern will work on business related tasks such as accounting, accounts payable, contracts, managing volunteers, building operations, budgeting, and other daily aspects of running a non-profit theatre.  Box office work will also be expected.  Candidates should be able to work independently, possess strong multi-tasking and problem solving skills, and have a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel.
Marketing / PR Internship

The Marketing / PR Intern will work with the executive director on writing and submitting press releases, participating in PR events and special promotions, corporate and senior group sales and special events, and uploading calendar submissions. He / she will also work with the marketing committee to promote group sales and special events. Box office work will also be expected. Candidates should possess strong multi-tasking and problem solving skills and have a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel.
Development / Fundraising Internship
The Development Intern will work with the executive director on program advertisement sales, sponsorship solicitation, assisting with fund raising events, generating fund raising ideas, grant writing, and grant research. Box office work will also be expected. Candidates should possess strong multi-tasking and problem solving skills and have a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel.
Literary Internship
The Literary Intern’s duties include reviewing submissions of new scripts and writing evaluations, maintaining the script library, and assisting as a dramaturge for productions when necessary. The Literary intern will prepare packets of plays for the volunteer Reader’s Circle and correspondence with readers. The Literary intern will also assist the artistic staff with the preparation of letters to playwrights and agents, and writing articles for the theatre newsletter. Literary interns also support the theatre in secondary duties, which may include House Management or other Front of House or running crew responsibilities.
Education Internship
The Education Intern will assist the education director with the instruction of summer classes for children. He / she will also help facilitate yearlong educational opportunities by publicizing next season’s shows to teachers and schools, and will keep teacher and school databases up to date. He / she will also assist in creating study guides and with planning and implementing educational outreach opportunities. This position may include possible understudy opportunities for the summer season. Applicants should have some basic administrative experience, experience working with children, and strong theatre training.

PRODUCTION INTERNSHIPS

Stage Management Internship
The Stage Management Intern will work as the assistant stage manager for the summer shows. He / she will work alongside the production stage manager during rehearsal and will also work closely with the actors and directors. Duties in rehearsal will include assisting with set up, help with generating paperwork, organizing props, keeping track of breaks, and assisting with recording blocking. The Assistant Stage Manager will help set up each performance and will lead run crew for summer productions.
Costume Internship

Costume Interns will assist the professional costume designer and costume shop manager, interact with directors and actors to help the show run smoothly, run wardrobe, pull, shop, and/or rent costume pieces and accessories, assist in fitting and alteration of costumes, and some costume construction, maintenance and other support.
Production Internship (2 positions available)
Production Interns work on both lighting and scenery for the summer season. Interns will work with the master electrician to hang and focus lighting before a production, possibly run the light board during shows, maintain a lighting inventory, read a light plot, and organize lighting instruments. Production interns will also work with the TD and designers in the execution of the set design, including set construction and assisting in scenic painting. This position requires taking part in strike and load-in of each production and may assist with show running and maintenance.        
 
INTERN REQUIREMENTS

All applicants must be 18 years of age and must complete all required paperwork to be considered. A completed application includes the following items:

  •   - Personal Statement
  •   - Work Samples (Costume Shop, Sound, Stage Management and Properties positions) Work samples will not be returned to the applicant. Photocopies/digital images/DVDs are encouraged.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Some candidates will then be asked to interview.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does Playhouse Theatre Group offer internships in exchange for college credit?
Yes.   Internship programs are available in exchange for school credit. Each program in unique based upon the relationship between the school and Playhouse Theatre Group Inc. Please check to see if we are on your school’s approved list of Internships. These internships are unpaid.

How can a college or university become involved in Playhouse Theatre Group’s Internship Program?

Does Playhouse Theatre Group offer paid internships?
During the summer we have 6 paid interns that will receive a stipend of $100 / week.  For the fall and spring we will discuss the possibility of a small stipend with the applicant on an individual basis.

Will I be able hold a job during the program?
If hired, summer interns would be required to work between 30 - 40 hours a week per week. In the fall and spring timing is more flexible.  Many interns have been able to find additional work that doesn’t conflict with their internship requirements and schedule.

Do Playhouse internships provide housing?

Currently, No - Rental properties are prolific and vary in price. Single apartments can range upwards of $550/mo. Living with roommates can be a much cheaper alternative. For roommate and apartment listings, Craig's List is a great resource.

Are high school students or adults exploring new career paths eligible to apply for an internship?
All participants must be 18 years of age. High school students should consider volunteering. Adults exploring new career paths in arts administration and production are more than welcome to apply.

Are Playhouse internships available throughout the year?

We encourage interns to apply for positions throughout the regular season.  We offer stipends during the summer.  For the fall and spring we will discuss the possibility of a small stipend on an individual basis.
